Agfa's return to the digital world

At the Photokina 2006 there were not that many surprises in way of digital camera introductions. The last couple of years we have seen several big names disappearing from the digital imaging market or merged with other manufacturers. One well-known name in the world of photography is Agfa. It is therefore quite nice to see the rebirth of this brand with a new series of digital cameras. AgfaPhto DC-633xs digital cameraAlthough Agfa Photo is not developing any digital cameras and just bought the license to brand-name a line of cameras, we are welcoming Agfa Photo and wish them success in this competitive world. The AgfaPhoto DC-633xs is a compact digital camera with a six Megapixel CCD image sensor on board and a 3x optical zoom lens. Nothing really special, just an entry-level model for the mass market....

Just like the equipment his company repairs, Harry Bostley has a knack for seeing things that others can?t. That?s how Bostley, with the help of dedicated employees, created a multi-million dollar business from nothing. Rochester Cassette Sales and Service, located at 50 Hojack Road in the Village of Hilton, is one of three major players in the x-ray cassette repair business nationwide. RCSS has a network of more than 150 x-ray dealers and they provide services and products to many hospitals across the country. Last year, 10,000 cassettes came through the shop. The company?s success is predicated on its ability to work with hospitals, clinics and private practices to cut their imaging costs. How it all began This healthy business, with 13 employees, has humble roots....

Agfa returns with AgfaPhoto DC-735 7 megapixel shooter
Posted Sunday, September 10, 2006 8:53:30 AM by Blog57 Team
Most photog types should easily recognize the Agfa name -- they've been doing the whole traditional and digital imaging thing forever. Unfortunately, they've farmed out their brand for a new AgfaPhoto line of digicams to be built by German consumer electronics company plawa, and plawa's first stab at an Agfa-cam isn't looking too incredibly hot. The new DC-735 packs a 7 megapixel CCD, 3x optical zoom, a rechargeable li-ion battery, 2.5-inch LCD and not a whole lot else. The metal housing looks durable, but incredibly bulky, and there's no word on optical image stabilisation or any other fancy specs. Of course, the real proof is in the pics, and if the DC-735 manages some spicy photos all might be forgiven, but for now it's just looking like a Europe-only also-ran. Prices should range from 99 to 199 euros for the planned five to ten megapixel range of AgfaPhoto cams -- which is due this month -- so at least the price is right.[Via LetsGoDigital]Tags: 7 megapixel, 7Megapixel, agfa, agfaphoto, plawa ....

Comdex Fall '98 Highlights

As expected, there were relatively few new-product announcements by the digital camera manufacturers at Fall Comdex this year, as many of them have just announced new models within the last few months. We did see several new models, but all were under non-disclosure, so we can't talk about any of them yet. We can say though, that it will be an interesting first quarter in the digicam arena. (Although we will say that what we saw for the most part was evolutionary, rather than revolutionary. Based on what we saw, we wouldn't counsel holding off buying a digicam if you're on the threshold of doing so anyway: There'll always be something bigger, better, faster around the corner regardless of when you decide to take the plunge. While there's some neat stuff coming from several players, none of what we saw fell into the "hold everything, wait right there" category.) In the report below, most pictures are just reduced-size inline JPEGs....

'Everything In My Life Is Destroyed, So I Will Fight Them'

"I am in Hezbollah because I care," the fighter, who agreed to the interview on condition of anonymity, told me. "I care about my people, my country, and defending them from the Zionist aggression." I jotted furiously in my note pad while sitting in the back seat of his car. We were parked not far from Dahaya, the district in southern Beirut which is being bombed by Israeli warplanes as we talk. The sounds of bombs echoed off the buildings of the capital city of Lebanon yesterday afternoon. Out the window, I watched several people run into the entrance of a business center, as if that would provide them any safety. The member of Hezbollah I was interviewing-let's call him Ahmed-has been shot three times during previous battles against Israeli forces on the southern Lebanese border....
