Shoppers rush to exchange gift cards
Posted Monday, January 08, 2007 2:48:43 PM by Blog57 Team
Traditionally a day to return Christmas gifts, Dec. 26 has become a busy shopping day in its own right, and many of the shoppers who packed Southwest County parking lots Tuesday were out to spend gift cards they had received, not to exchange those argyle slacks from Aunt Maude. The cards have grown in popularity in the last five years, as more retail chains allowed cashiers to activate them at the cash register. A survey last month by the National Retail Federation estimated that consumers would buy nearly $25 billion in gift cards this holiday season, about 30 percent more than in the same two months of 2005. Several shoppers interviewed Tuesday said they don't have to return gifts as often as they once did. In a world of increasingly complex technology and baffling arrays of features, cards let the giver avoid increasingly difficult decisions, one man suggested....

Review: Casio Exilim EX-S770

Picture yourself riding along the narrow, ancient streets of Florence, Italy on your red Aprilia scooter. You pass Florence's most famous landmark, The Duomo Cathedral, and realize that it's not supposed to be in your route to the Galleria dell' Accademia. So, being the savvy traveler that you are, you pull out your 7.2MP Casio Exilim EX-S770 (street $350) to look at the street maps. You can do this because the EX-S770 allows you to place data files and web pages into the camera, which converts them to JPEG files for viewing -- in essence, creating a "poor man's G.P.S." Sure this may be a novelty in the point-and-shoot camera world overrun with novelty features, but like many of the other features in this camera, it's actually quite useful. The Exilim has a glossy, liquid finish with chrome intertwined....

Bart Stein '09: Ultra-compact, ultra-affordable cameras
Posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 10:49:09 PM by Blog57 Team
In technology, thinness usually shows us that "less is more." The slicker and more svelte something is, the more likely it is to create a giant gash in your wallet. For several years, this principle was especially true of digital cameras. Those enviable ultra-thin wedges of shiny metal you would occasionally see someone remove from his or her back pocket at a party to snap a picture were outside most of our budgets. Olympus and Casio, however, recently introduced products that defy this traditional logic. Each company is now offering ultra-compact cameras that you may finally be able to afford. From Olympus, there's the FE-190, a six megapixel beauty that's priced astonishingly low at $199. Don't be fooled by the low price, however. There's very little about this camera that feels cheap....

TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Share prices are expected to open mixed, tracking Wall Street's lead where stocks were little changed at the close after a dip in consumer confidence countered better-than-expected corporate quarterly results, dealers said. The US Conference Board said its index of consumer confidence fell to 105.4 from 105.9 in September. The reading was well below the 107.8 analysts expected and raised concerns on Wall Street about the strength of consumer spending. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 5.77 points or 0.05 pct to 12,080.73, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.01 point to 1,377.94. The Nasdaq composite index edged up 2.94 points or 0.12 pct to 2,366.71. The Chicago-traded Nikkei futures contracts settled at 16,365 points, up slightly from 16,350 at the close of the Osaka Securities Exchange yesterday....

Casio Exilim EX-Z600
Posted Wednesday, October 25, 2006 6:50:29 PM by Blog57 Team
Casio's Exilim EX-Z600 is an ultra-compact camera, yet it has a bright, large 2.7in LCD. That's important because this camera lacks an optical viewfinder, and when shooting in bright sunlight, images on the Casio's display are perfectly visible. While informal shots look pretty good, the camera's images earned below-average scores for colour accuracy and sharpness. The EX-Z600 doesn't rate highly in exposure accuracy either, especially compared with other point-and-shoot cameras we have looked at. Usability is always a concern with pocket-sized cameras – especially those with big LCDs that take up a lot of space – and the EX-Z600's controls are definitely a mixed bag. The zoom selector is well designed – the ring surrounding the large shutter-release button is easy to locate and operate when composing shots....

Hand Held Products, the global leader in image-based data collection solutions, and CASIO Europe, have teamed up to provide German Rail with a new imaging-based solution for processing e-tickets. German Rail, Europe's largest railway, has implemented a new ticket and mobile ticket system using Casio's IT-3000 mobile computer powered by Adaptus(TM) Imaging Technology 5.0. Prior to deploying this new solution, German Rail conductors were forced to manually type in a 16-digit ticket number whenever a home-printed ticket (or e-ticket) was presented. Recently, the railway experienced exponential growth in e-ticketing, and currently processes over 50,000 e-tickets per day. More than 12,000 CASIO IT-3000's are being delivered via Systemtechnik, a German company that helped develop the product....
