If you love to take videos or if you're just a gadget geek, then you'll want to see this. A new video camera that costs less than $150 is put to the test. For about $130 you can have one of the smallest video cameras around. "They're making everything extremely small. And it fits in my purse, it's very convenient." This is what the video looks like shot by the pure digital point and shoot camcorder. "What's the price?" "130 bucks." "Oh yeah I would pay for it. It seems like something logical that you could use on vacation or at a sporting event." "The video is actually pretty good. In fact, you're looking at me now through the camera. And you're listening to me through the built-in microphone that's on the camera. I know you're wondering how do you see the video, there is no tape....

Pakistani shutterbug featured in Time

WASHINGTON: A young Pakistani amateur photographer, Ali Khurshid from Karachi, has been recognised by Time magazine as one who is working in a non-verbal medium and whose work, posted on the Web, like that of millions of others, is helping the world come together. Ali Khurshid (22) was featured in a Time magazine essay that said, "There aren't that many digital cameras floating around Karachi, Pakistan, or computers, for that matter. Ali Khurshid started taking pictures with a disposable Kodak his parents gave him when he was 8. Since then he has graduated to fancy digital gear, but he has hung on to his low-tech attitude." "I love how the best pictures are usually taken with Holgas and other toy cameras," he was quoted as saying. "It just confirms my belief that the eye is supreme in taking a brilliant photo ......

COMMENTARY: Ah, the gift that keeps on confusing

As chestnuts roast and turkeys baste on Christmas morning, fear will imbed itself across the faces of millions of unsuspecting consumers, especially old ones like me. It's not that I can't figure out how to operate modern electronic gadgets; it's just that they're taking more and more time to figure out, and I don't know how long I've got to live. Tis' the season to be thoroughly frustrated. In just over a month, we will gleefully tear open colorfully wrapped Christmas gifts and cry out in Yuletide ecstasy, "Oh yes! I've always wanted one of these?" Filled with trepidation, the horrid reality of the unknown will slowly grip our senses. The device is definitely electronic. It smells new. Santa is the man! But which side is the top and where's the front? The gift receiver hasn't a clue how the device works and therefore is tied with the gift giver in operational knowledge....

State of the Arts

Theres a fascinating exhibit currently at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Its called The Border Film Project. Thousands of disposable cameras were distributed along the Arizona border with Mexico to migrants and Minutemen. These amateur photographers took pictures of their daily lives and returned the cameras via mail to the BFP sponsors. As the museum publicity says: "The resulting images provide rare insight into the complexities of individual experiences. The juxtaposition of these images is profound. It reveals differences and similarities that suggest fundamental questions about humanity, identity, security and survival." In other words, it is designed to show that there are always two sides to every issue. Art of a different kind. The exhibit runs through Jan. 28. * * * * * Jackie and I have fallen in love with El Salvador....

They outline the butterfly wings with wax, then use fabric markers to color them after the wax dries. Suddenly, Carey spots Israel Garza, who has colored a portion of his butterfly's wings brown. ....

Rechargeable Batteries are the Best Deal

But disposables still make up the largest share of the market. So, before you go blow your money we will show you the best values. Powering everything from digital cameras and portable music players to laser tools and even tape measures, it's no wonder we spend over four-billion dollars a year on batteries. But how do you know what's the best battery for your needs? Consumer reports just ran tests on 16 different disposable AA batteries, including ones from Duracell, Panasonic, and Energizer. There were four types in all; lithium, premium alkaline, regular alkaline, and nickel oxy-hydroxide. Tests evaluated the battery life in high-drain devices such as a digital camera, and medium-drain devices such as a CD player. The tests showed big differences in battery performance depending on what's being powered....
