Olympus estimates full-year operating profit of 90 billion yen ($762.4 million) for the year ending March 2007, up from an earlier forecast of 73 billion yen and in line with the average market expectation for 90.9 billion yen in a survey of seven brokers by Reuters Estimates. The company's profit totalled 62.5 billion yen in 2005. Rival precision equipment makers such as Canon Inc. and Fujifilm Holdings also reported robust earnings last month thanks to currency gains and strong demand for new cameras and office consumables. Olympus also raised its full-year sales estimate to 1.04 trillion yen from an earlier target of 1.035 trillion yen.... | |

| | | Karen Meiman: A snapshot of the road not taken | | Posted Monday, November 13, 2006 12:53:01 PM by Blog57 Team | | He's been on the road since Oct. 17, sleeping about 50 percent of his nights in the cab of his 2000 Ford Ranger. His companions? A mattress, a cooler and a Coleman heater. Wess' Nikon and Pentax cameras are always by his side. And most importantly, those breath-taking views Wess can often capture just steps away from his primitive sleeping quarters. Among the many views on this four-week trip were the eight wild turkey - two of them completely snow white - who flew just ahead of his truck one morning while en route to a magical sunrise from a canyon in Alabama. There was also the spectacular, saturated and brilliant fall colors Wess captured in Virginia. "Every single leaf was yellow, orange or red and not one had fallen," he says. It's been a good year, chasing the changing colors of the leaves, Wess says.... | |

| | | Point-and-Shoot Image Stabilization Test (Winners: Pentax Optio ... | | Posted Wednesday, October 25, 2006 12:49:12 PM by Blog57 Team | | Putting five point-and-shoot cameras through various tests, Digital Camera Info tried to determine which one presented the best image stabilization for your money. The result was surprising. Although the Nikon Coolpix P3 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX50 have good image stabilization and performed notably better with the feature on, the Sony DSC-T30 and the Pentax Opti A10 produced better images. Why? Because they're better cameras, and image stabilization is just one part to getting good picture. One thing of note is that the Pentax Optio A10 moves the CCD around instead of the lens to provide image stabilization—uncommon thanks to the lens' lighter weight. But the results say the A10 performs just as well as the others. – Jason Chen DCI Comparison Feature: Point-and-Shoot Image Stabilization Tested [Digital Camera Info] .... | |
