Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg have visualised vibration and rotation in the nuclei of a hydrogen molecule as a quantum mechanical wave packet. What is more, this has been achieved on an extremely short spatio-temporal scale. They "photographed" the molecule using intensive, ultrashort laser pulses at different points in time and compiled a film from the separate images. This allowed them to visualise the quantum mechanical wave pattern of the vibrating and rotating molecule (Physical Review Letters, Online-Edition, November 6, 2006). ....

BRUNKENSEN, Germany — Albrecht von Goertz, the legendary designer and German aristocrat, died on October 27 at age 92. Goertz was responsible for the design of such classic automobiles as the BMW 507 and the Datsun 240Z, as well as such well-known industrial designs as the Mont Blanc fountain pen. As an associate of Raymond Loewy and later as a New York-based freelance designer, Goertz designed furniture, cameras, appliances, boats, apparel, musical instruments and other products for such clients as Agfa, Custom Craft, Fuji, Polaroid, Puma and Rowenta. But it was his work on the 507 and later the BMW 503 that raised his stature in the automotive world. Goertz would again gain acclaim as the talent behind the design of the original Z-car. His name also has been linked with the equally stunning Toyota 2000GT....

Munich. Designer Albrecht Graf Goertz passed away last Friday at the age of 92. In the mid-1950s, Count Goertz designed the legendary BMW 507 to create not only an icon of the BMW brand but also what many regarded as the most beautiful two-seater car in motoring history. His second design for BMW, the elegant BMW 503, was destined to stand in the shadow of the 507. But Goertz’s artistry and creative powers went far beyond the bounds of automobile design. He created a wide range of consumer objects ranging from fountain pens and cameras all the way to musical instruments, furniture and textiles. “In Albrecht Graf Goertz, BMW has not only lost the creator of the BMW 503 and 507, one of the most consummate cars in history. The entire design fraternity bids farewell to one of its most passionate champions, a man who was not only a car designer heart and soul but also creative and successful in every field of design,” said Christopher Bangle, Head of BMW Group Design....

Disgruntled Santa in the house, keeping it real on the wizzle-wagon, and all of that garbage. I've got a question for all of ya'll, and don't sweat the answer too much-- it's not the kind of question that you can get wrong. How many of you lovable tykes enjoy the seminal stylings of Joy Division? Don't even think about raising your hand, Billy, that was clearly a rhetorical question. Of course you like Joy Division! Their gloomy, tightly-woven, and freakishly danceable sound paved the way for all those shithead revivalists you eat up with a spoon, and they're widely regarded as one of the greatest bands of all time....
