| | | Taiwan digital camera makers may get order increase from global brands | | Posted Tuesday, October 31, 2006 10:49:40 AM by Blog57 Team | | As Sony, Canon and Nikon, the world's top three digital camera brands, shift their marketing focus to expensive digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera models, second-tier international brands stand a chance of increasing their global market share in 2007, which may result in more orders for leading OEM/ODM makers in Taiwan, according to industry sources in Taiwan. Second-tier international brands include Panasonic, Casio, Fujifilm, Pentax, Kodak, Samsung and Olympus. Samsung, for example, expects to increase its digital camera shipment volume from 8.5 million units for this year to 13 million in 2007, according to the sources. Samsung, which currently has 90% of its digital cameras produced in South Korea and China, has to either expand its own production capacity or rely on Taiwanese OEM/ODM makers to meet the 2007 shipment goal, the sources pointed out.... | |

| | | Sony takes a massive 94 percent earnings hit on global battery recall | | Posted Friday, October 27, 2006 6:50:03 PM by Blog57 Team | | TOKYO -- Sony's profit plunged 94 percent for the July-September quarter as a global battery recall and red ink in its video-game business hurt the Japanese electronics and entertainment company. Sony Corp.'s group net profit for the fiscal second quarter totaled 1.7 billion yen ($14 million), dwindling from 28.5 billion yen the same period the previous year, the Tokyo-based manufacturer said Thursday. An extra cost of 51 billion yen ($429 million) related to a global recall of 9.6 million Sony laptop batteries was a major factor behind the sharp drop in profit. Almost every major laptop maker in the world, including Dell Inc., Apple Computer Inc. and Lenovo, has announced recalls of Sony lithium-ion batteries that could overheat and burst into flames. The recall -- which has tarnished Sony's brand image as a longtime maker of icon products such as the Walkman portable player and PlayStation video game machine -- offset the lift Sony's books got from an 8 percent rise in July-September sales to 1.85 trillion yen ($15.6 billion) from 1.7 trillion yen a year earlier.... | |

Kodak Easy Share ONE line The Easy Share ONE line consists of two cameras that share the same features one is six megapixels and the other is four. Both have three-inch rotating displays with touchscreen menus but no viewfinder, and feature 185 MB of usable internal memory, enough for 1500 pictures at low resolution.... | |

| | | Sony Projects Lowest Profit in 5 Years on PS3, Recall (Update1) | | Posted Friday, October 20, 2006 2:48:16 PM by Blog57 Team | | Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp., the world's second- largest consumer electronics maker, said profit will fall to the lowest in five years after the company cut the price of the PlayStation 3 game console and recalled millions of notebook computer batteries. Net income for the year ending March 31, 2007, will decline 35 percent to 80 billion yen ($675 million) from a year earlier, compared with a July forecast of 130 billion yen, the company said today. Fiscal second-quarter profit slid 93 percent to 2 billion yen, according to a preliminary earnings statement. The profit slump undermines Howard Stringer's plan to rebuild the company's brand after an unexpected loss in 2003, dubbed the ``Sony Shock'' by investors, led to his appointment last year as its first foreign-born chief executive officer.... | |
