Cameras can't be trusted

Users upload 65,000 videos each day to the popular YouTube Web site, according to the company that runs it. Most seem to be about cats or other pets, although there is a vast archive of bad karaoke as well. Some of the content is professionally produced, and occasionally it is genuinely funny or dramatic, but most simply proves that camera ownership and Internet access are more widely distributed than talent or taste. ....

Web site's items draws Buffett lawsuit
Posted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 10:48:36 AM by Blog57 Team
Jimmy Buffett has filed a lawsuit alleging that a Galveston, Texas, merchant is unlawfully using his trademark to sell goods on an online store. The lawsuit, filed Monday in federal court, seeks to shut down Robert Akard's Web site, www.underonehut.com. The lawsuit claims the Web site falsely represents itself as "Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Online Store for Merchandise." A lawyer for Buffett said part of the problem is that some items on the Web site, which sells clothing and beach-themed novelties, are overpriced. "Jimmy Buffett's not in business to make money," said Buffet's lawyer Anthony Buzbee. Akard's attorney, Darrell Apffel, said he would "vigorously oppose" Buffett's efforts. -- Associated Press Pitt rep stops Brangelina wax wedding Organizers of a fantasy wedding on the Las Vegas Strip between Hollywood's hottest unmarried couple got cold feet....

TACOMA – Today's installation of a new Interstate 5 traffic camera at 56th Street in Tacoma requires three other Tacoma area cameras to be taken offline for a few hours. The unavailable WSDOT cameras are at I-5/SR 16 and 38th Street in Tacoma, and Porter Way in Fife. Sections of the Tacoma traffic flow map on the WSDOT Web site also will be down today. Crews are making every effort to make sure the cameras are back online before the afternoon commute. The 56th Street camera, expected to be online next week, fills a gap between 38th and 72nd streets. Motorists will get an additional view of I-5, while WSDOT gets one more tool to monitor traffic flow and more efficiently respond to incidents on the freeway. More than 100 Puget Sound area traffic cameras, including 24 in the Tacoma area, are available on the WSDOT Web site at www.wsdot.wa.gov ....

Fufa media committee boss Rogers Mulindwa disclosed that the federation has bought three cameras that will help in the supervision of league games as well as national senior soccer team, Cranes matches. Cameras on border plagued by glitches
Posted Saturday, November 04, 2006 2:52:26 PM by Blog57 Team
AUSTIN, Texas Texas launched its ambitious effort to have Internet users watch the border for illegal immigrants. But the network of surveillance cameras Friday was plagued by technical problems, the images were grainy and the cameras were placed so high that it was hard to distinguish a person from, say, a bush. Republican Gov. Rick Perry, who announced plans over the summer to spend $5 million on the virtual posse, asked for "forgiveness on the front end of this," but dismissed the problems as routine computer glitches. "I'm sure that as you start a big program like this that you will have some glitches," Perry, who is up for re-election, said in Brownsville, along the Mexican border. The cameras will operate at criminal hotspots. Members of the public who see something suspicious over the Web cameras can e-mail authorities....

Paper copies best for legal documents

Q: In the event of an emergency (house fire, earthquake, etc.), I would like to scan my important documents, including my insurance policies, passport and birth certificate, then save them as pdfs and upload them to a secure Web site. That way, I could access and print them from anywhere. Can you suggest a site that would work for this? A: I'm not sure that a pdf of your passport would impress anyone at the airport. In fact, it could earn you an interview with Homeland Security. Likewise, copies of notarized and official documents such as birth certificates and wills may not be legally valid. This is a case where technology doesn't help. You'd be better off putting duplicates of official documents in a safe-deposit box at a bank. Now that you've broached the subject, however, the Internet is a great place to back up lots of stuff, whether it's documents, photos or even music....

TO ENHANCE its accessibility to the public, the Makati Police Station will be going online early next month, launching its own website that will enable residents to report crimes using the Internet. People can lodge their complaints through the website and they can also learn more about the station, its personnel, its capabilities, and deployment among others, Superintendent Gilbert Cruz, city police chief, told the Inquirer. The station will also post its accomplishment reports online for public viewing, including how the police acted on each complaint filed through the Web, he added. The Makati police website will be another step toward the stations full use of computer technology. Recently, Cruz launched Police I-Chat, a project that will ensure that he is constantly in touch with his precinct commanders and section chiefs....

Wal-Mart streamlines Web site to woo buyers

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, is relying on the relaunch of its Web site -- which features a less cluttered and more interactive approach -- to convert more browsers to buyers this holiday season. The makeover was unveiled earlier this week and marks the site's biggest redesign since 2000. It allows customers to navigate walmart.com with fewer clicks, offers bolder photos of products using zoom technology, bundles products to create an outfit or show how they look in a room, and emphasizes the company's low prices. ....

Wal-Mart upgrades Web site with product details, faster checkout
Posted Tuesday, October 24, 2006 6:48:47 PM by Blog57 Team
Wal-Mart Stores on Tuesday will launch an overhauled Web site that is designed to burnish Wal-Mart's brand image as well as improve the shopping experience. The redesign, involving more than 2 million Web pages, aims to look more sophisticated with larger, sharper images, and to offer more product details and faster checkout. The site will be more interactive, offering pop-up boxes with information on some products, as well as increased streaming video. For example, the site will be able to stream shows of its new fashions. The new site is a major step in the company's efforts to attract a wider range of patrons. Wal-Mart is wrapping up a review of how its $580 million annual ad account is spent and will select as early as this week a lead ad agency. ....

The urge to converge
Posted Saturday, October 21, 2006 2:48:06 AM by Blog57 Team
Earlier this year, the world flocked to the web to watch a reality show about eagles living in a nest on British Columbia's West Coast. At its peak, the EagleCam site was getting 14 million unique hits a day and reached 17,000 simultaneous streams, says Arthur Griffiths, the current CEO of the company behind the scenes, Infotec Business Systems Inc. To put those numbers into perspective, consider the world record for simultaneous streams for one event is 100,000, which was set by Pope Benedict XVI's first mass. Now this tiny Vancouver-based company has even more audacious goals. It wants to be the Discovery Channel of the Internet. But it also wants to be a player in the music industry and, get this, an international telecommunications company. To that end, Infotec signed a deal in late September with Saudi Arabian wireless carrier UBG/Mazsky International to deliver messaging, voice-over-Internet protocol and video-streaming services to the Middle East....
